Vector Candidate Pool - How Many Pages a Search Brings In

How many pages each side of the search brings in before ranking

Vector Candidate Pool sets how many pages a search brings in before they are ranked: up to that many of the pages closest in meaning to what the visitor typed, and up to that many of the best word matches.

  • Default: 500.
  • Range: from 10 to 1,000, in steps of 10.

Bigger or smaller

  • Bigger: more pages are considered. Broader results, a little slower.
  • Smaller: faster, and fewer pages can appear in the results.

Filters the visitor picks, such as a language or a date, are applied first, so the pool fills with pages that pass them.

A page found only by meaning also has to be nearly as close as the best meaning match to stay in the results, so a bigger pool does not fill the list with pages that are far from the search.

Which pages from the pool can appear is set by Search Mode.

Change it

  1. Open Search Tuning in the settings of your index.
  2. Drag the Vector Candidate Pool slider. The value shows on the right and is saved as you move.
  3. To go back to 500, click Reset next to the slider.

The slider appears when your index can use AI search.
