Web and Documents Tabs
Above the results, the hosted search page shows two tabs. Web searches the pages of your site. Documents searches your PDFs and office documents, with one result per document. Visitors switch with one click, and the search they typed stays the same.
Turn the tabs on or off
- Open your index in the Control Panel and go to the WebCrawler tab.
- Click Settings in the Quick Access bar, then open Search Tuning.
- Under Show Documents Search, choose On (Web and Documents tabs) or Off (no tabs, web search only). It is saved at once.
On is the default. With Off, the tabs are replaced by a plain label with the name of your index, and every search looks at web pages only. More on this setting: Show Documents Search.
Pages of a PDF in the results
Each page of a PDF can be its own result. Crawling your site does this by itself; with Data Ingestion you send the pages (how). A search then lands on the page that answers it:
- Page N before the title says which page matched. The title opens the PDF at that page.
- Read Page opens that one page in the AI Reader.
- Read Document opens the whole document, its pages in order.
One result per document, on the Documents tab
- Each document is one result, with its best pages listed under its title. The line under the title says how many pages matched and which ones, plus the number of pages and the date of the document.
- Up to five pages show at first. Show more pages lists the rest.
- Without a search, when a visitor just browses, the pages are listed in page order.
- A document can be closed and opened again. On a computer, its title stays at the top of the screen while its pages scroll by.
- A document with a single matching page shows as an ordinary result.
- Paging and endless scrolling count documents, not pages. The Web tab is not grouped.
See it live on an Opensolr test index: the Documents tab.
To group pages the same way in your own search code: One result per PDF.
