How Query Elevation Rules Work

Which search a rule applies to, and what deletes it

How the Rules Work

Every Pin, Exclude and Exclude All you click is a rule. This page answers three questions: which searches a rule applies to, where it applies, and what deletes it.

Which searches

  • Pin and Exclude apply when a visitor searches the same words, in the same order, as the search you made the rule on. Capital letters make no difference.
  • A different wording is a different search: a rule on pricing plans does not apply to pricing plan or plans pricing. Make a rule for each wording that matters; Query Stats shows what your visitors really type.
  • Exclude All is the one rule for every search: the page never shows.
  • There is no pin for every search: a pin always belongs to one search.

Where they apply

  • The rules live in your Opensolr account and are applied at the moment of each search. Nothing is written into your pages or your documents, and nothing needs to be indexed again.
  • They apply on your hosted search page at search.opensolr.com and in every website where you embedded it.
  • The Opensolr Search module for Drupal and plugin for WordPress keep their own pins and exclusions inside the CMS (Drupal, WordPress).

What deletes them

  • Remove under a result deletes the rules of that result, while it is on your screen.
  • Turning Enable Query Elevation off deletes every rule of the index, after this question: Disabling elevation will clear ALL pinned and excluded result rules for this index. Continue? It cannot be undone; turning it on again starts with no rules.
  • Deleting the index deletes its rules too.

Query Elevation can also be turned on and off from code: Enable or disable Query Elevation by API.
