Set Up Facets in Facet Filter Mapping

Pick the fields, the widgets and their order

Set Up Your Facets

You choose the facets of your hosted search page in one window, Facet Filter Mapping. It lists the fields of your index; you tick the ones visitors should filter on, give each a widget and a label, and put them in order.

Open Facet Filter Mapping

  1. Open your index in the Control Panel and go to the WebCrawler tab.
  2. Click Settings in the Quick Access bar, then open Search Facet Filters.
  3. Click Configure Facet Filters. The window opens over the whole screen and reads the fields of your index.

Choose and arrange the facets

  1. Find a field. Type part of its name in Search fields..., or click a column title to sort the list. Docs tells you how many documents have the field, so you can skip empty ones.
  2. Tick On for each field visitors should filter on.
  3. Pick its Widget. The list offers only what fits the field: List (checkboxes), Min/Max Slider, Duration (seconds → h:mm:ss), Date Range Picker or Hierarchical (drill-down) (what each one does).
  4. Write the Label visitors will see, such as Brand instead of the field name. Opensolr proposes one from the field name.
  5. Set Min: the fewest results a value needs to be listed. The default is 1. A higher number keeps rare values out of List and Hierarchical facets.
  6. Set the order: drag a row by its handle, or type a number in Order. The sidebar shows the facets in this order. A field you tick goes to the end of the ones already ticked.
  7. Click Save Configuration, then Close.

The facets show on your hosted search page at the next search, and in every place where it is embedded. The sidebar is on by default, so the embed code needs no change.

Reset All

Reset All, at the top of the window, removes every facet of the index after you confirm. It cannot be undone.

Good to know

  • Every facet you turn on, except Hierarchical ones, is also offered in the sort list, under its label.
  • Turn on only what visitors need. A short sidebar of useful filters works better than a long one.
  • Which fields you can expect in the list: Which fields can be facets.
  • Building your own search page? The list of fields is also available from code: Get facetable fields.
