Drupal Site Search: the Opensolr Search Module

Your Drupal content in an Opensolr Index, set up from the Drupal admin

Site search for Drupal

The Opensolr Search module connects your Drupal site to an Opensolr Index and runs everything from the Drupal admin: it fills the index with your content, gives your site a search page and adds answers, search by image and a chat bot. It works on Drupal 10.1, 11 and 12.

01 · How it fills your index

Two tabs, two ways to fill it:

  • Data Crawler: the module publishes a sitemap of the content you choose, and Opensolr crawls your site from it. Content you edit leaves the index and comes back, updated, with the next crawl; content you unpublish or delete leaves it at once. Data Crawler
  • Data Ingestion: the module sends your content to Opensolr itself: nodes, Drupal Commerce products and, with Include attached files (PDFs, documents), your files. All of it at once, and, with Enable real-time sync, every change the moment you save it. Data Ingestion

Either way, every page gets what Opensolr adds to every document: meaning vectors, text read from pictures, language and more. What every page gets

02 · What your visitors get

  • A search page on your own site, where the Drupal search box sends your visitors, with hybrid search, facets, autocomplete, AI Hints, the AI Reader and search by image.
  • With the Opensolr AI Search part of the module: Drupal AI Search on the same Opensolr Index (nothing is indexed twice), and a site assistant, the chat bot set up with one click, with its Stats and History in Drupal. AI Search · Site Assistant
  • Social and search meta tags on your pages, added only where your site has none. SEO

03 · What you control

The tabs of the module: Settings, Data Crawler, Data Ingestion, Facet Mapping, Search Page, Search Tuning, Analytics, Elevation and Filters. Opensolr AI Search adds AI Search and Assistant, with its own Settings, Stats and History.

04 · Get started

  1. Install the module: installation.
  2. On Settings, paste your Opensolr email and API key and click Save Credentials.
  3. Pick one of your indexes, or choose a Region and click Create New Index: the module creates the index and installs the Opensolr schema on it.
  4. Fill it from the Data Crawler or the Data Ingestion tab.

05 · Already on Search API Solr?

That is a different route: the Search API Opensolr module puts your Search API index on an Opensolr Index, and the Turbo Indexer indexes a large site in parallel. It keeps the schema of Search API Solr, so the site search features above are not part of it.
