Bandwidth: What Counts and the Monthly Limit

The data your index sends back, month by month

Bandwidth

Bandwidth is the amount of data your Opensolr Index sends back. Each index has its own monthly bandwidth from your plan.

01 · What counts

The size of every answer the index sends: search results, replies to updates, everything except the Solr Admin screens. What you send in is not counted.

Your site or app Your Opensolr Index request: not counted answer: counted Your site or app request not counted answer counted Your Opensolr Index
Only the answers count. Smaller answers use less bandwidth.

To use less: ask only for the fields you show (fl) and only as many results as you show (rows). More tips: Solr Traffic Bandwidth.

02 · When it starts again

On the 1st of every month. Bandwidth follows the calendar month, not the date you pay your plan. Unused bandwidth does not carry over.

03 · Where to see it

  • Info tab of the index: Bandwidth, used this month out of your plan, updated every 20 minutes. For a cluster it adds up the master and its replicas.
  • Bandwidth Usage tab of the index: Total Usage, Monthly Average, Peak Usage and Latest Month, a chart of the last 24, 12, 6 or 3 months, the table per month with its growth, and Export Data to a CSV file.
  • Dashboard: Overall, Avg and Max per index, for all your indexes.

04 · Warning before the limit

When an index reaches 90% of its monthly bandwidth, Opensolr emails you and your team members once. You can change that percentage, per index, in the Opensolr app.

05 · Over the limit

An index over its bandwidth stops answering

Every request to it, searches included, gets 403 Forbidden, and a running crawl of the index stops. The block lifts by itself at the next usage check once the index is back under its plan: on the 1st of the next month, or after you upgrade your plan. The same happens when an index goes over its disk space.
