Delete your data, keep your account

This page explains how to delete the data that the Android apps Opensolr, Opensolr Photos and Opensolr Mail hold under your Opensolr account, without closing the account. To delete the account itself, see Delete your account and your data.

Delete everything an app has indexed

Opensolr Photos and Opensolr Mail each keep what they find in a search index of their own, inside your account. Deleting that index deletes everything the app holds about your photos or your mail, in one step, and you can do it yourself at any time.

  1. Sign in at opensolr.com/users/login.
  2. Open My Indexes and find the index created by the app. The index of Opensolr Photos starts with photos_, the index of Opensolr Mail with mail_.
  3. Choose Delete and confirm. The index and every document in it are removed from our servers at once.

Your photos and your mail are not deleted by this, because we never hold them. Photos stay on your phone and mail stays at Fastmail, where you delete them yourself. Deleting an app from the phone does not delete its index, so do this step as well if that is what you want.

Sign a phone out

Every phone signed in through one of the Opensolr apps has a record in your account, with its own API key and its push registration.

  1. Sign in at opensolr.com/users/login and open Account › Devices.
  2. Choose Sign out next to the phone and confirm. Its record, its API key and its push registration are deleted at once.

The usage thresholds, notification choices and alerts of the Opensolr app belong to the account, not to one phone, so they stay after a sign-out. To have them deleted without closing the account, write to us as described below.

Delete single photos or messages from the index

If you want to remove only some photos or messages rather than all of them, do it from the app.

  1. In Opensolr Photos, select the photos you no longer want indexed and delete them from the phone, then run Re-Sync from the sync screen. Photos that are no longer on the phone are removed from the index.
  2. In Opensolr Mail, delete the messages and empty Trash. Messages removed at Fastmail are removed from the index the next time the app indexes.

Ask us to delete it for you

If you cannot sign in, or you want something else removed, write to us.

  1. Write to support@opensolr.com from the email address of the account. We only accept a request that comes from that address.
  2. Use the subject Delete my data and say what you want deleted.
  3. We answer with a confirmation, then delete it. Requests are processed within 30 days, normally within a few working days.

What is deleted and what is kept

When the index of an app is deleted, or a phone is signed out, this is what happens to the data held under it.

Indexed photo data

Deleted. The file path of each photo, the words describing it, the tags, the people and the notes you wrote, and the numbers that make it searchable.

Places

Deleted with the index. The city and country of a photo are held in the index, never separately.

Photos

Nothing to delete. Photos are sent to our servers only to be read, and are not stored. They remain on your phone.

Indexed mail

Deleted with the index. The text of the messages and attachments Opensolr Mail indexed. Your mail itself stays at Fastmail.

Phone record

Deleted at sign-out. The phone’s model name, its API key, the app version and its push registration.

Account

Kept. The account stays open with its email address, name and other indexes. Delete it from the account deletion page if that is what you want.

Invoices

Kept. Accounting law requires us to keep issued invoices and the payment records behind them. They hold the billing details, not your indexed content.

Server logs

Kept for a short period as part of normal operation, then overwritten. They hold request lines, not indexed content.
