Disk Space of an Opensolr Index

How big your index is, and how to keep it small

Disk space

Disk space is the size of your Opensolr Index on the server. Each index has its own disk limit from your plan.

01 · What counts

The index files: your documents plus the structures that make search fast. They are often bigger than the raw data you sent. Deleted documents keep their space until Solr merges them away, which Optimize does at once.

The number of documents is not limited, only the disk space they take.

02 · Where to see it

  • Info tab of the index: Disk, used out of your plan, updated every 20 minutes.
  • Solr > Index List: the Disk (Mb) column, for every index.
  • Dashboard: Overall, Avg and Max per index.

03 · Warning before the limit

When an index reaches 90% of its disk space, Opensolr emails you and your team members once. You can change that percentage, per index, in the Opensolr app.

04 · Over the limit

An index over its disk space stops answering

Every request to it, searches included, gets 403 Forbidden, and a running crawl of the index stops. The block lifts by itself at the next usage check once the index is back under its plan: after you free space, or after you upgrade your plan.

05 · How to use less

  1. Remove what you no longer need with Delete By Query.
  2. Run Optimize to drop deleted documents for good. It can briefly double the size of the index while it runs, so start it while there is room under the limit.
  3. Store fewer fields. A field you only search, and never show, does not need stored="true" in schema.xml. How can I save disk space for my index?
  4. Get more space with a bigger plan: Pricing.
