Changing the Site Search Schema Safely

What is safe to change, and what needs a reindex

Changing the schema

The schema.xml of your index is yours. Open the index in the Control Panel, edit the file in Configuration and save: the index reloads by itself with the new file.

Before you change it

  1. Adding a field, a dynamic pattern or a field type is safe and works as soon as you save.
  2. Changing the type of a field that already holds data needs your documents sent again: they were indexed with the old type and will not match the new one.
  3. Keep the core fields. The crawl of your site, Data Ingestion, the hosted search page and the AI features read them by name (Core fields).
  4. Keep the vector size at 1024 while you use the vectors Opensolr makes. Change it only if you index vectors of your own, from another model.
  5. Word lists (synonyms.txt, stopwords.txt, protwords.txt) apply as soon as you save. Synonyms work at search time, so they need no reindex; stopwords and protected words also shape indexing, so they reach older documents only when those are indexed again.

An index on a managed-schema works the same way, with a different file format: Move from managed-schema to schema.xml. To check an index against the site search schema, or to put the original back: Check and install the schema.
