API Rate Limits

Calls per minute and per hour

Calls per minute and per hour

The Opensolr API takes a set number of calls per minute and per hour. The limit keeps one busy script from slowing the platform down for everyone.

The limits

  • Per minute: 120 calls, counted for your account and, separately, for the address the calls come from.
  • Per hour: 1,200 calls, counted for your account.

These are the defaults. Opensolr can set other limits for an account or an address.

Reading your own Data Ingestion queue (ingest_status and the ingest_queue lists) is never limited, so you can follow your jobs while your account is at its limit.

At the limit

The API answers 429 Too Many Requests with a Retry-After header, in seconds:

  • ERROR_RATE_LIMIT_PER_MINUTE, with Retry-After: 60.
  • ERROR_RATE_LIMIT_PER_HOUR, with Retry-After: 3600.

Wait, then retry, and spread your calls out. An account or address blocked by Opensolr answers 429 with ERROR_RATE_LIMIT_BLOCKED or ERROR_IP_BLOCKED.

Other limits

  • The monthly allowance of AI requests is a separate limit: API Quota.
  • Searches sent straight to your index, not through the API, follow the fair use limit on the pricing page.
  • See your calls under Account › API Usage: API Usage Dashboard.
