Field Weights decide how much a word match counts in each part of a page. A visitor's words found in the title usually say more about a page than the same words somewhere in the body, so by default the title counts most, then the description.
The five fields
| Field | What it holds | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Title | The title of the page or document | 0.20 |
| Description | The description or summary of the page | 0.05 |
| URI | The address of the page | 0.01 |
| Text | The body text | 0.01 |
| LD Text | Structured data on the page (JSON-LD) | 0.01 |
What matters is how the numbers compare to each other: a field with a higher number makes a match in it count more.
Field Weights act on the words side of the search only. How much the words count against meaning is set by Semantic ↔ Lexical Balance.
Change them
- Open Search Tuning in the settings of your index.
- Under Field Weights, type a new number in the box of a field. The smallest value is 0.01. The up and down arrow keys change it by 1.
- Leave the box: the new value is saved.
Two common changes:
- Raise Title when your titles are precise, such as product names.
- Raise Text and LD Text when the answer usually sits deep in the page, as in articles and documentation.
To start over, use Reset All to Defaults at the bottom of the panel.
