Fresh: Newer Results First, When the Visitor Asks

A switch for visitors who want the latest first

Fresh Results

Next to the sort list there is a Fresh switch. When a visitor turns it on, newer documents move up the ranking, while good matches still count. It is off until the visitor turns it on, so the first page everyone sees is ordered by relevance alone.

What it does

  • It changes the order of the results for that visitor's searches only. Your index settings do not change.
  • It stays in the address of the page, so a fresh search can be shared or bookmarked. It also stays on through paging, filters and the next search typed in the box.
  • While it is on, documents without a date are left out, because their age is unknown. Turn it off and they are back.
  • It works with the AI switch on or off.
  • When the visitor sorts by a field, that field decides the order (Sorting results).

Choose how strong it pushes

  1. Open your index in the Control Panel and go to the WebCrawler tab.
  2. Click Settings, then open Search Tuning.
  3. Move Fresh Results Bias Weight between Subtle and Newest first. The line under the slider tells you after how long a document loses half of its push.

The default is 0.5: a document keeps half of its push for about 9.6 days. At 0 it keeps it for a year, at 1 for six hours. The slider does nothing on its own; it only sets how hard the visitor's switch pushes. More: Fresh Results Bias Weight.

Not the same as data-fresh

The data-fresh option of the embed code is a filter: it keeps only recent results. The Fresh switch keeps every dated result and only changes their order. See Embed code options.
