Password-Protect the Search Page
The hosted search page is public by default: anyone with the link can search. For an intranet, a staff knowledge base or a site that is not live yet, you can put it behind a username and password.
Turn it on
- Open your index in the Control Panel and go to the WebCrawler tab.
- Click Settings in the Quick Access bar, then open Search Page Password.
- Switch on Password-Protect Search UI. The message Search page is now password-protected. confirms it.
Switch it off the same way; the message then says Search page is now public.
Which username and password
There is no separate password to invent: the search page asks for the username and password of your index, the same ones that protect the index itself. The section shows the username. To change the password, use the Security tab of your index (HTTP authentication); the search page follows.
Whoever has these credentials can also reach your index directly. Give them only to people you would trust with the index.
What visitors see
- The browser asks for a username and a password before the page opens.
- Wrong or no credentials: the page answers Authentication required. and shows nothing of your index.
- The protection covers the whole page, including suggestions and filters, and every website where the page is embedded.
