When a sync stops early

What a sync does when something gets in its way, and how the next one carries on.

A sync never has to start over. When something gets in its way it skips, waits or stops, and the next sync carries on from where this one ended. Here is what happens in each case, and what the Sync screen says.

A photo cannot be read on the phone

It is skipped and counted as skipped. It is listed under the red mark above the photo grid, and it is not tried again until the file changes or you pick it for Re-sync. A file Android still lists but that is gone from the storage is simply dropped.

Opensolr refuses a batch of photos

They are counted as skipped and stay queued: the next sync sends them again.

Too many requests

The app paces its calls under your account's per-minute and per-hour limits by itself. If Opensolr still asks it to slow down, the sync pauses and continues on its own a little later: Paused for a moment: Opensolr asked the app to slow down. It continues on its own.

This month's AI requests are used up

The sync carries on. New photos are indexed by date, camera, place, file name and your own words, without being read into words, and the Sync screen says how many. They are read at the first sync after the allowance resets: such a photo waits 1 hour, then 4, then 16, then once a day before it is tried again, so it never keeps a sync busy. A photo read before keeps what was read out of it, as long as it is the same file.

The battery is low

Below 20% and not charging, the sync pauses: Waiting for the charger. It continues on its own when the phone is charging.

The index is over its disk space or bandwidth

The sync stops and a notification opens your Opensolr account. Your tags keep being saved on the phone and go up on the first sync after the limit clears.

The index password changed

The app reads the new one from your account and goes on.

The sign-in stopped working

The phone was signed out in Account › Devices, or its key was refused. The sync stops, a notification asks you to sign in again, and the app returns to its sign-in screen.

More than half of the indexed photos are missing

Nothing is removed from the index. That is almost always a phone that cannot see its photos, not photos you deleted. If you did delete them, the Sync screen offers Remove the N missing photos from the index.

The index holds fewer photos than the phone knows

The Sync screen says The index holds N of the M photos this phone knows. Reset fills it back from the phone's copy.

You press Stop

What was written stays written, and nothing runs again, on its own or on schedule, until you press Re-Sync or another button.

Anything else

What was written is committed and the sync stops: The last sync did not finish. It is tried again at the next Re-Sync.

A plan without vector search is not a stop: nothing is sent to be read in the first place. See without photo recognition.
