People and faces

Name a face once and find that person everywhere, with faces compared on your phone only.

Name a face once and the app finds that person in your other photos. Faces are found and compared on your phone only; no face is sent to Opensolr to be recognised. This works on every plan.

01 · Naming a face
  1. Open a photo full screen and tap it to show its actions.
  2. Tap Faces. Every face found in the photo gets a frame. No faces found in this photo means there is none the app can read.
  3. Tap a face. Who is this? asks for a Name; Save puts it on the face. Remove the name takes it off again.
  4. Tap Find <name> in other photos to review the photos where the app thinks that person is.
02 · "Is this Anna?"
  • Faces that match very closely get the name on their own, without asking.
  • Faces that match well are offered under Is this Anna?, already ticked; weaker matches are offered unticked.
  • Tick every face that is that person, then Add to N photos. A long press and a drag tick many at once.
  • A face you leave unticked is never offered for that person again.
  • New photos are checked as they arrive, so the review grows by itself.
03 · Names other apps wrote

If Google Photos, Lightroom, digiKam or another app already wrote the names of the people into a photo file, in the XMP property PersonInImage, those names are read too and put on the matching faces. The app reads them only; it never writes into a photo file.

04 · Photos you already had

New photos have their faces read when they are indexed. For the photos that were in your index before, tap Find faces in all photos on the Sync screen. It reads every photo once, only while the phone is charging, shows Reading faces: N of M, and can be stopped there. Faces already read are kept and never read again.

05 · Searching and managing people
  • Type a name to find that person's photos. Accents do not matter.
  • The People filter lists everyone by name with their number of photos, and so does the People section of Stats.
  • The cross next to a name in the People filter removes that name from every photo and every face that carries it (Remove <name> everywhere?). The photos stay.
  • In Tags, people and words a name can only be taken off a photo; names go on by naming a face.
  • Similar photos under a photo starts with Same faces: the photos of the same people. See similar photos.
06 · Where faces are kept

Two small models inside the app find and measure the faces (YuNet finds them, SFace tells them apart). Each face becomes a short numeric fingerprint. The frames, the names and the fingerprints are kept on the phone and written into your own Opensolr Index with the photo's other facts, so a reinstall or a new phone gets them back without reading the photos again. Only your phone ever compares them. See privacy.
