Three buttons on the Sync screen rebuild what your index holds, each in its own way. None of them touches your photos, and all of them keep your tags, people and wording.
Re-read all photos? sends every photo through Opensolr again, as when it was first indexed, so it gets whatever Opensolr does better now: the words, the place, the people and the search vector.
- Nothing is emptied: search keeps working the whole time, and each photo is simply written again.
- What Opensolr already read from the same picture comes back from its cache.
- Stopping is safe. The next sync carries on where it was; photos already read again are not sent twice.
Read your documents again? queues every photo that has printed text in your index to be read again at the next sync, cleaned up. Nothing is removed meanwhile. The app says it costs nothing on your plan: these pictures were read before, and Opensolr answers from what it kept. If no photo has printed text, the app says No photos that look like documents to read again.
Reset your index? empties the index and fills it again from the copy on this phone.
- The index is emptied. The phone's copy is not touched.
- A sync starts and writes the copy back through
photos_restore, 50 documents per request, with no photo sent again. The Sync screen and the notification show Restoring your index with the count. - Opensolr makes again only what the phone never held: the search vectors, the keys for similar photos and the label text.
- If a batch is refused or the connection drops, the next sync carries on from where the restore stopped.
No photo is read again. The search vectors are made again from the words, which counts toward your plan's AI requests: a tenth of a request per photo whose vector Opensolr has to compute, and nothing for a vector it still holds.
Use Reset when the index holds fewer photos than the phone knows, or when what the index holds is wrong. When only the contents of the photos need refreshing, Re-read is enough.
Every index configuration has a version number, in the index and in the app. When the app ships a newer one, nothing changes until you agree:
This version of Opensolr Photos comes with a new index configuration. Your index will now be emptied and filled again from the copy on this phone. — Later keeps searching on the old configuration and pauses syncing; Reset and re-sync starts it.
- If the phone has no copy yet, the index is read into one first, so nothing of yours is lost.
- The index is emptied, and only then the new configuration is uploaded.
- The index is filled again from the phone's copy, exactly as in a Reset.
An index set up by a newer version of the app than the one installed is left alone, and the app asks to be updated: Paused: update Opensolr Photos to keep syncing.
