The phone's copy of the index

Everything the index holds, except vectors and similar-photo keys, kept on the phone.

The phone keeps its own copy of everything its Opensolr Index holds, except the search vector and the keys used to find similar photos. It is why browsing and Stats cost no request at all, why a sync never downloads your index, and why a Reset sends no photo again.

Figure 1 — the copy is read from the index once, kept in step by every write, and is what the index is filled back from.

01 · What it holds

For every photo in the index: the id, the path, the folder, the file name, the type and size, the md5 of the file, the dates, the camera, lens and exposure, the position and the place names, the words the photo was read into, your own wording, the printed text, the people and their faces, your tags, and which models read the photo.

It leaves out the search vector and the keys for similar photos: both are large, only useful inside your index, and made there.

02 · Read once, then kept in step
  • The copy is read from the index once: at install, at a reinstall, or after you pick another phone's index. The screen says Reading your index once meanwhile. A read that stops part way is done again at the next start.
  • From then on it is never read again. Every write answers with the document Opensolr just wrote, and that answer is what the phone stores.
  • It lives in a private database on the phone, excluded from backups. Uninstalling the app removes it; Reset does not touch it.
03 · What it answers, with no request
  • Browsing: the years, months and days, their counts and the photos in them.
  • Stats.
  • The comparison every sync makes: your folders against the copy. No document is read out of the index for it; a sync with nothing to do sends only a few small checks.
  • The tag and name suggestions, and the Already on these photos counts, in the tagging sheets.
  • Same faces in similar photos.
  • The map, when the index cannot answer: the phone draws its own photos instead.

Still asked of the index: a typed search and its facets, the filter lists (once, then kept until something is written), autocomplete and Did you mean, similar photos, and the photos the map draws.

04 · The copy fills the index back

The copy is the source the index is rebuilt from. After a Reset, a new index configuration, or an index found empty or recreated, the index is filled again from the copy: 50 documents per request, with no photo sent again. Opensolr makes the search vectors again from the words. See Re-read, Documents and Reset.

One consequence: the index can be one sync behind the phone. Your tags and wording are saved on the phone first, and the sync right after carries them up.

05 · Changing the index from outside

It is a regular Opensolr Index, yours to query, export or back up. Edits made to its documents from the control panel or another tool do not reach the phone's copy, and a Reset writes the copy's version back over them.
