One library on several phones

Phones on the same index share one library: new items, edits and deletions reach every phone.

Two or more phones can use the same index. They then share one library: what one phone adds, edits or deletes reaches the others on their own.

01 · Joining a phone to the library
  1. Install the app on the second phone and sign in with the same Opensolr account.
  2. The app asks Re-use one of these indexes from your Opensolr account? and lists your phones. Pick the one whose library you want.
  3. The phone reads the index once, then adds its own photos to it. A file that is the same on both phones counts once.

The question comes when this phone has no index of its own yet and your account already holds one. See phones you no longer use.

02 · What travels between the phones
New photos, clips and PDFs

Searchable on every phone as soon as they are indexed, since it is one index. Each phone reads what the others added at its next sync. With a backup, the files come down too: photos as 720p copies, clips and PDFs whole.

Edits

Tags, people, your wording and places set on one phone show on the others after their next sync. A phone that still has its own unsent change on a photo keeps it and sends it.

Deletions

An item deleted in the app on one phone is deleted on all of them: from the index, from each phone, and from the backup. See deleting.

The backend

One per index. Set, changed, forgotten or cleared on one phone, it is the same on every phone at its next run. See Change, Forget and Clear.

03 · What never happens
  • A phone never takes another phone's photo out of the index because it does not have that file. A sync removes only files that phone once had itself.
  • Two different files with the same folder and name, common with WhatsApp pictures and screenshots, stay two items; neither replaces the other.
  • A file deleted on another phone is removed here only if it is the same file. One written here well after the deletion is a new item and stays.

On Android 11 and newer, removing a file another phone deleted may need your yes: Android asks once, the next time the app is open. With All files access allowed (the GitHub version) the app removes it by itself.
