Reindex From Scratch or Reset Index

One re-reads your site, the other deletes your documents

Two buttons of the Data Crawler tab sound alike and do opposite things. Reindex From Scratch reads your whole site again and keeps your documents. Reset Index deletes your documents.

Reindex From Scratch

WordPress asks: "This will clear the crawler cache and start a completely fresh crawl. Continue?" The crawl runs once and stops when your sitemap is done. Use it after big changes to your site, when you want every page read again without leaving a crawl schedule running.

Reset Index

Reset Index deletes every document in your Opensolr Index.

Pages, products and documents, whether they came from a crawl or from Data Ingestion, and the documents of any other site that shares the index. Search shows no results until you fill the index again.

WordPress asks: "This will permanently DELETE ALL data from the search index. Are you sure?" When it is done, the tab says "Index reset. All documents deleted." Then fill the index again with Reindex Everything or with Ingest All Now on the Data Ingestion tab.

Reset Index followed by a new crawl is also how pages that no longer exist on your site leave the index all at once.
