Autocomplete and Did You Mean

Suggestions as visitors type, and spelling help

Two helpers make typing easier on your search page: suggestions that open under the search box as the visitor types, and a "Did you mean" link when a word looks misspelled. Both are on by default, on the Search Page tab: Autocomplete and Spellcheck.

Autocomplete

  • The list opens after 2 characters and a short pause of 200 milliseconds.
  • First come up to 3 past searches of your visitors that found results, then matching pages from your index, up to 10 suggestions in all.
  • A past search matches when every typed word starts one of its words, in any order: "curre" finds "Alternative Current".
  • Suggestions follow the open tab and the active filters.
  • Visitors move through the list with the arrow keys, pick with Enter and close it with Escape.

Past searches come from the search log of the Analytics tab. With Analytics off, no new past searches are added, and the list shows pages from your index.

Did you mean

When your index suggests a better spelling, a line "Did you mean:" appears above the results, with a link that searches the suggestion. It is not shown after a search by image, where the words come from the picture.
