Search by Image

A photo as the search query

Visitors can search your site with a photo instead of words: a product they hold, a label, a page of a brochure. The camera button sits at the left of the search box on your search page.

How it works for the visitor

  1. Click the camera button and pick a picture: JPEG, PNG, WEBP, GIF, BMP, TIFF, HEIC or AVIF, up to 20 MB.
  2. Opensolr looks at it. When the picture has readable text, it searches by that text, and a line says "Read from your image" with the words and, when Opensolr can also tell what the picture shows, a link to search by picture meaning instead. Otherwise it searches by what the picture shows.
  3. Barcodes and QR codes found in the picture are listed under the box as links ("Code on your image").
  4. The search box stays empty with a small copy of the photo in it. Clicking it opens the photo larger, with the words it was read as.

Typing a new search goes back to a normal text search.

Messages visitors may see

  • "That image is over the 20 MB limit."
  • "That file is not an image we can read. Try JPEG, PNG, WEBP or HEIC."
  • "We could not describe that image. Try another photo."
  • "Too many image searches. Please wait a moment and try again." (more than 30 image searches in a minute from one visitor)
