Fresh is a switch next to the sort menus of your search page. When a visitor turns it on, newer content moves up the results. Older content is not hidden, it only moves down.
The visitor's choice
- Fresh is off on every new visit. Each visitor decides, for each search.
- It is a plain link: the state lives in the address of the page, so a shared or bookmarked results page keeps it.
- It stays on when the visitor types a new search, picks a filter or changes page.
- On a search with AI on, results that have no publication date are left out while Fresh is on.
- AI Hints answers from the same newer documents the visitor sees.
- A field sort replaces the order of relevance, and Fresh with it: Sorting.
How hard it pushes
You set the strength on the Search Tuning tab: Fresh Results Bias Weight, a slider from 0 to 1.0, in steps of 0.1. It is 0.5 by default. The weight sets how fast a document loses its advantage with age, as a half-life:
- at 0, about a year;
- at 0.5, about 9.6 days;
- at 1.0, about 6 hours, so the newest match comes first almost regardless of how well it matches.
The age of a document is its publication date: the publish date of a post you push, or the date Opensolr finds on a crawled page.
The same switch on every Opensolr search page: Fresh results and Fresh Results Bias Weight.
