Filters and groups

Narrow the results with filters, and sort them into groups.

Narrow the results with filters, and sort them into groups. Both come with search on Opensolr; Fastmail search has neither.

01 · Filters

Tap Filters in the tools row of the search screen, or in the tools row of any mailbox. Each section lists the values your results have, with their counts:

  • Year and Date range: any two days on a calendar, or Any date.
  • Folders, Trash and Junk always included, and Accounts.
  • Attachment types, such as .pdf or .jpg.
  • Message is: Unread, Flagged, Answered, Attachments, Text inside attachments.
  • From and To, each person with their address, one line per address, and Companies.
  • Day of the week.

Show with the count applies them, Clear all removes them. Every filter in use shows as a pill under the tools row; tap a pill to remove it.

02 · Groups

The Group button opens GROUP BY:

  • Best matches, the default: the results that stand out on top, then Also similar, folded, for the rest. A short list, or one with no clear gap in its scores, is all Best matches.
  • No grouping: one ranked list.
  • Month, Day, Sender, Company or Account: up to 20 groups with 5 results each. Show all under a group turns it into a filter and shows all its mail.

Groups fold with a tap on their heading; the button next to Group folds or opens them all.

03 · What stays

Your words, filters, grouping and scroll position stay as you left them while the app is open; the grouping you choose stays for good. The search covers every folder, Trash and Junk included: one tap on Trash or Junk in Folders narrows the results to either.
