Installing the app

Download the signed APK from GitHub, check its signature if you want to, and keep it up to date.

The app is distributed as a signed APK on GitHub. Installing it takes about a minute. Android 8.0 or newer.

  1. Download the APK on your phone: opensolr-notes.apk, the latest release.
  2. Allow the install. Android asks once whether your browser may install apps. Allow it for this install.
  3. Open Opensolr Notes and sign in. See signing in.
01 · Verifying the download

Every release is signed with the same key. To check an APK before installing it, on a computer with the Android build tools:

apksigner verify --print-certs opensolr-notes.apk

The SHA-256 digest of the signer certificate must be:

2c044aa14fa3a28a4f6b66e408b5d393635bea30dc2d626a449f63ee5c7ca9c0
02 · Updating

When it starts, at most every six hours, the app looks at the latest release on GitHub. When a newer one exists, Settings → App shows an Update to X button. The app downloads the new APK itself, checks that it carries the same signature and is really newer, and hands it to Android’s installer. Nothing is installed without you tapping the button.

  • The first time, Android asks you to allow installs from Opensolr Notes. Allow it, come back and tap the button again.
  • Check for updates, in the same place, asks GitHub on the spot.
  • A copy installed from Google Play is updated by Google Play: that build does not look for updates itself.
03 · Uninstalling

Uninstalling removes the app and the copy of your notes it kept on the phone. Your notes stay in your notes index in your Opensolr account; install the app again and sign in to get them back, or delete the index from the control panel if you no longer want it.
