Fresh: Newer Content Higher
Fresh is a switch your visitors flip on the results page. When it is on, newer content climbs the ranking; how much is up to you.
For your visitors
- The Fresh switch sits next to the sort menu, above the results. It is off until a visitor turns it on.
- It changes the order, never which matches there are, with one exception: documents without a publication date are left out while Fresh is on.
- The choice is kept in the address of the search, so paging, filters and shared links keep it.
For you: how hard it pushes

The slider goes from 0 (Subtle) to 1.0 (Newest first) and starts at 0.5. It sets how fast a document loses its freshness advantage:
| Weight | Freshness advantage halves after |
|---|---|
| 0 | a year |
| 0.5 (default) | about 9 and a half days |
| 1.0 | 6 hours: the newest match wins almost regardless of how well it matches |
A news site wants a high weight; a manual or a catalog a low one. The slider does nothing on its own: it only matters when a visitor turns Fresh on.
