Opensolr Search and Search API Solr
Two different ways to put a Drupal site in Solr. Search API Solr makes Drupal do the indexing; Opensolr Search hands that work to Opensolr and gives you a finished search page.
| Opensolr Search | Search API Solr | |
|---|---|---|
| Who does the indexing | Opensolr reads your pages from the outside, or Drupal sends a plain document when an item is saved. Meaning, language and sentiment are added on Opensolr's servers. | Drupal builds each item and sends it to Solr, in cron batches or, with Index items immediately, as items are saved. |
| Fields in the index | The fixed Opensolr schema, plus only the fields you map for facets. | A Solr field for each Drupal field you add to the index. |
| Solr configuration | Applied by the module when it creates or attaches the index. | A configuration set you get from Search API Solr and install on your Solr server. |
| Search page | Ready at /opensolr-search: facets, autocomplete, spelling, sorting, Fresh, AI Hints, documents tab. | You build it, usually with Views; facets and autocomplete come from other contributed modules. |
| Words and meaning | Hybrid search on the Opensolr Index, with the AI requests of your plan. | Keyword search; meaning search comes from separate AI modules. |
| Extras in the module | Search analytics, query elevation, persistent filters, SEO meta tags and a sitemap, a chat bot. | Not part of Search API Solr; other modules or your own work. |
Staying on Search API?
- Search API Opensolr makes your Opensolr Index a Search API server, with the connection taken from your Opensolr account. Setup: Drupal Search API Opensolr.
- The Opensolr Turbo Indexer indexes a large Search API site in parallel, from Drush.
Want Drupal AI Search on top of Opensolr Search? The Opensolr AI Search part serves it from the same index, with nothing indexed twice: see Drupal AI Search.
