Protected URLs Behind Varnish, HAProxy or Cloudflare

When a proxy sits in front of your site

Behind a proxy

A protected URL lets a visitor in by the address the visit comes from. With Varnish, HAProxy or Cloudflare in front of your site, every visit comes from the proxy, so the page answers 404 to everyone, you included.

What happens

Varnish

The server sees the cache, not you. A cached copy of the page could also be served without asking the server.

HAProxy

The server sees the load balancer, not you.

Cloudflare

Visits come from Cloudflare, and they do not use your tunnel at all.

What works

Your device reaches the server's own web server directly, through the tunnel, with the hosts line from Open a protected URL. The option stays available on every server.
