Import and Export a MySQL Database

Download a database, or load an SQL file into one

Move a database in and out

Export gives you a compressed copy of a database to download. Import loads an SQL file into a database, and puts the database back as it was if the import fails.

Where: Servers › My Servers › your server › Database tab › the buttons on a database row

01 · Export a database

  1. Click Export on the database.
  2. A window follows the work: the dump is made, then compressed into a .sql.gz file.
  3. At Download Ready!, click Download File.
The download link works once, for one hour, and only from the IP address that asked for it. Need it again? Export again.

02 · Import an SQL file

  1. Click Import on the database you want to load into.
  2. Read the warning. A backup of the database is made before the import; if the import fails, the database is restored from it.
  3. Choose the SQL File: .sql, .sql.gz, .sql.bz2, or a .zip with one .sql file inside. Under it, the dialog shows the largest file your server accepts.
  4. Tick I understand this may overwrite existing data and want to proceed.
  5. Click Import SQL. A progress bar follows the upload, then the import.
  • The file goes straight to your server.
  • If the file has CREATE DATABASE or USE statements, its data goes into the database those statements name, not the one you clicked.

03 · Bigger files

The largest file is set by PHP on your server: post_max_size and upload_max_filesize. Raise both with a preset or by hand, see PHP configuration. The dialog reads the new limit the next time you open it.
