Opensolr Photos 3.16: People by Their Faces, and the Photos of the Same People

· Opensolr Photos · New Feature · All updates

Name a face once. The app finds that person in the rest of your photos, on the phone, and every photo of the same people is one tap away from any photo.

01 People by their faces

Open a photo and tap the face button under it: every face found in it is framed. Tap one, give it a name, and it is on the photo. From then on the app looks for that person in the rest of your library. The faces that clearly match get the name on their own; the ones it is less sure about are offered to you under Is this Anna?, ticked in advance when the match is close, for you to confirm or untick. Long press and drag ticks many at once. A face you leave unticked is never offered for that person again.

  • On your phone alone: the faces are found and measured by two small models inside the app. No picture and no face is sent anywhere to be recognised, and nothing but your phone ever compares them. The names and the fingerprints go only to your own Opensolr Index, with the photo's other facts, so a new phone gets them back without reading the photos again.
  • New photos have their faces read as they are indexed. For the photos already in your index, Find faces in all photos in Sync reads them once, only while the phone is charging, with progress, and can be stopped there.
  • Names already on your files (written by Google Photos, Lightroom, digiKam or Apple Photos) are put on the matching faces.
  • Remove a name everywhere from the People filter, with one tap on the cross next to it. The photos stay.

02 The photos of the same people

Similar photos, under any photo, now starts on a new stop: Same faces. A named face stands for the person, so every photo that names them, or shows a face the app knows as them, is found — all of them, not only the few closest to that one face, and with no limit on how many. A photo of two people finds the photos of both together. It is answered from the copy on your phone, with no request at all.

03 Smaller changes

  • Filters open as a screen of their own and never close on a swipe.
  • With the keyboard up, the first back only puts the keyboard away.
  • Every button answers a tap visibly.
  • A photo keeps its identity when its folders are copied to another phone. The app never removes photos from the index when the phone cannot be read, and asks before removing many at once.
  • Reset, Stop, Re-sync, Re-read and Documents stop everything first, do their work, then start again.
