Opensolr Mail 1.13: Select Every Result, Move It Anywhere, Dates in Words, Attachments Read on the Server
Opensolr Mail 1.13 is about doing things to a lot of mail at once, and about search that understands you a little better. A search now selects every result it found, not only the screen, and moves all of it in one request. “Last month” or “2 weeks ago” in the search box mean exactly that, in seven languages. Attachments are read on Opensolr’s servers straight from Fastmail, with the pictures inside a PDF read by OCR, so a scanned invoice is found by the number printed in it. And a new phone can re-use the index the old one built.
01 Select every result, act on all of it
- Select all results. The tick at the top of the results selects every message the search found, not only the ones loaded on the screen, and says how many. Nothing in that set can be unticked: it is the whole search, or your own hand-picked selection as before.
- Move to any folder, Trash or Junk. Move to lists your folders; each message goes to that folder of its own mailbox, so a search across three accounts files each account’s mail in its own Archive. Junk also reports the messages as spam. A dialog names the count before anything moves.
- The same set every time. The whole-search action takes the messages that match the words of your search, the meaning matches left out, so the set is exact and repeatable.
- One request, both places. The work is done on Opensolr’s servers, on Fastmail and in your index at the same time, thousands of messages in a few seconds. The app waits with a progress screen and then says how many moved.
02 Dates in words, and how strict the words are
- Time in words. “electricity bill last month”, “yesterday”, “2 weeks ago”, “this year”, “the past 3 months”: the words of time keep only the messages from the days they mean, counted from today, in any of the app’s seven languages. A month and a year, such as “march 2025”, worked already. The ? in the search box lists them.
- Lexical matching. Settings → Search has a new choice next to the words-and-meaning slider: Flexible, Balanced or Strict, how many of your words a message must contain before it counts at all. Balanced is the default.
- Trash and Junk are searched too. Results come from every folder, and the folder filter always lists Junk and Trash, so one tap narrows the results to either.
03 Attachments read on the server, pictures inside PDFs included
- Not through your phone. The app no longer downloads attachments to read them. It hands Opensolr’s server a one-time link to each one; the server fetches it straight from Fastmail, reads its text into your index and does not keep the file. No Wi-Fi needed, nothing on your data plan.
- Page by page, pictures too. A PDF is read page by page, and the pictures inside it are read by OCR, so a scanned invoice or a photographed receipt is found by what is printed on it, the same way the Document to Text API now does.
- Two progress bars. Settings → Opensolr Index shows mail and attachments on their own bars, with Refresh to re-read the counts and Index now to start a pass.
04 Your index, on your next phone
- Re-use it. A new phone signed in to the same Opensolr account is shown the mail indexes already there, with how many messages each holds and when it was last indexed, and asks: Re-use one of these indexes from your Opensolr account? or No, start a new index. A re-used index is not read or embedded again; only what it does not have yet is added.
- Once per message. A message that reached two of your accounts is indexed and embedded once, so the index stays smaller and the AI requests of your plan go further.
- Manage this index in your Opensolr account. A button in Settings → Opensolr Index opens the index in the Opensolr app, offers the app if it is not installed, or opens it on opensolr.com.
05 Also in this release
- Every tap answers. Every button, tile and row flashes and taps back the moment you touch it, so nothing feels dead while it works.
- A scroller that holds still. The fast scroller stays where you left it, lingers a moment after you let go, and never jumps.
- Back closes the keyboard first. One Back puts the keyboard away; the next one leaves the screen.
- Help that folds. The ? in the search box opens the operators and the dates in words in sections you can fold.
- 1.13.1: a move is never lost. A folder or flag changed on the phone while the index was being written could be written over by the older state and stay wrong. Every write to the index now takes the folder and flags as the phone holds them at that moment, changes made on the phone reach the index at once, and on the first start after the update the index is aligned with the phone once.
Opensolr Mail updates itself from GitHub. If you installed it before, it offers the new version on its own within a day.
