Opensolr Mail 1.8: An AI Answer That Reads Whole Conversations, Search Operators and Best Matches

The AI answer in Opensolr Mail does not claim to cure anything. It reads the mails your search found and tells you what they say: the amount on the invoice, the day it was sent, the link to pay. Since 1.5 it reads far better, search does exactly what you tell it, and flagging a message no longer closes the app.

01 An AI answer you can lean on

• Whole conversations. When one of the best results belongs to a thread, every message of it is read, oldest first, each with only the words its writer added. The quoted history underneath is left out, so the same paragraph is never read ten times.
• Only the results that clearly fit. The first five on your screen, and of those only the ones close in score to the best; a weak match is left out rather than padded in.
• Who, when, what. Each message goes as From, To, the date written out (24 May 2026), the subject and its words, in plain text. Attachments are named, so the answer can point you to the contract that came with a mail instead of guessing what is in it.
• Your own instructions. A button next to the ? in the search box keeps a line of your own, such as “short, focused, lists only where they help”. It is added to every answer and never to the search. The icon turns orange while it is set.
• Regenerate or close. Ask again over the same results, or put the answer away. A new search stops the old answer at once.
• Written properly. Links open in the browser, and lists within lists, tables, quotes, code, italics and struck-through text are shown as they were meant.
• Room to finish. However long the mails, the answer always keeps its own room in the model and does not stop halfway.

02 Search that does what you tell it

• Operators. +word must be there, -word must not, "a phrase" stays together. With AI on they filter the matches by meaning too, so +amazon means Amazon and nothing that merely sounds like it. The ? in the search box explains them.
• Best matches first. Results open split in two: the ones that clearly fit on top, the rest folded under Also similar. Any other grouping is one tap away.
• Search when you say so. Nothing runs while you type; the search starts when you tap Search on the keyboard. No half-typed word is searched, and no AI answer is spent on one letter.
• The whole list. Scrolling keeps loading results to the end, with the fast scroller on long lists.
• Semantic to Lexical. The balance slider in Preferences now runs from Semantic on the left to Lexical on the right, as in every Opensolr app.
• Plain about your plan. Without AI in the plan, or with the month’s AI requests used up, the AI switch greys out, the answer and its instructions step aside, and search carries on by words.

03 The inbox

• Conversations look like conversations. A thread of several messages is a framed card with a stack of sheets under it, and unread mail stands out clearly, in the lists and inside a conversation.
• Images, per sender. Next to Show images there is Always show images: pictures from that sender load on their own from then on, until Stop showing images.
• Complete conversations. A conversation opens with every message, your replies in Sent included, and the same mail held by two of your accounts shows once.
• An index per phone. Every phone keeps its own Opensolr Index, found again after a reinstall; two phones on one Opensolr account never mix their mail.
• Writing. Replies open ready to type, with the cursor at the top, capital letters at the start of sentences, and a text size of your choice in Preferences.

04 Fixed

• Flagging closed the app. Flagging a conversation could close the app before it moved to the top. It now goes straight up, every time.
• No more quiet crashes. A failed read or write in the background, a button pressed in a notification without a connection, or a very large message could close the app. None of them can now.
• Scrolling a message. A message scrolls smoothly with the conversation, and a zoomed-in one pans freely in every direction.

Opensolr Mail updates itself from GitHub. If you installed it before, it offers the new version on its own within a day.
